The most common thing that I hear from people is “how have you lost all of that weight?” As soon as I hear the question, I begin to assess whether or not the person is actually interested in what I have to say. Unfortunately, most of the time they aren’t. If I think they are actually interested, I will begin to really tell them my story and include the whole process behind my transformation.  When I have determined that they are not really interested, I tell them, ”I started moving my body.”  At that point, I wait until they ask more before I say more.

I have discovered that most people who ask me that question are looking for me to divulge a “quick fix” technique that they could implement without much actual effort. Sorry to tell you this, but there is NO QUICK FIX! It takes work and determination.

More importantly, you need to understand that the transformation process will change you!

The only way to take off the weight and keep it off is to change your view of food and your body.  I have talked before about seeing food as fuel.  I often think about the scene in Finding Nemo where they are at the Shark meeting and reciting “Fish are friends, not food.”  When you are overweight, your mantra should be “Food is fuel, not a friend!”  You have to see food for what it is- calories to fuel your body- instead of as a comfort tool or as something to entertain you when you are bored.

When you begin seeing food as fuel, you can better understand why it is important to monitor and restrict the types of food that you put in your body.  As I have explained before, your body is a high performance machine.  You have to put only the best fuel in a high performance machine or you will run the risk of getting a bunch of crud in the engine and causing lower performance or death.  Just because they sell the food at the grocery store, does not mean that it is good for you. 

When you are ready to transform your lifestyle, you will have to do some research.  I suggest that everyone begin by watching two movies, Food, Inc. and Super Size Me.  I suggest that you research genetically modified (GMO) foods, the potential dangers of consuming soy (especially for women), as well as hormones, pesticides, and other possible toxins in foods.  Another huge piece of the puzzle is to research and learn as much as possible about the nutritional labels on food and why the nutritional information is important.  By researching all of these food related issues, you will be able to make better and more well-informed choices for you and your family.  Finally, you need to research how your body works.  You need to know how many calories you need per day and how much and what type of exercise is most beneficial for you and your body.

As you make your transformation, you will begin to see how important you are to your friends and family, as well as those you meet on the street.  You will begin to appreciate the intricacies of life and how precious it really is.  You will learn that you have the strength to move mountains and affect people in ways you could never imagine.
