It has been weeks… many weeks, it seems, since I have gone out for a walk/run by myself.  I usually have my miniature trainer, Drew (my 3 year old son), and my husband with me.  I love our family walks/runs!  They are fun!  However, I seldom get a chance to push my limits when I am with them.  So, this morning, when my body woke me up at 6:15 a.m., I decided to sneak out and do my old 3.81 mile route alone to see what I could do.

As usual, I started with fast walking to get my body warmed up.  I normally walk at least ½ a mile before I try to begin my running.  However, this morning at the ¼ mile mark, I felt the urge to run.  I began running and I ran and ran and ran….I ran until I felt like I was going to throw up and then I slowed down a bit, but I kept running…. and running….

My personal best continuous run distance, I believe, is 1.5 miles…..UNTIL TODAY!  For the first time, I started thinking about all of the things that I need to do today, about our family dinner and game night last night, about going to play trivia tonight, and a myriad of other things.  Before I knew it, I had run more than 2 miles and I was feeling….GREAT!  My breathing was steady and to my surprise, NOTHING was hurting (not even my broken toe) and the little devil in my head wasn’t begging me to stop running.  So I kept going!

Another first! I got my hair cut way shorter than it has been in about 15 years!!

As I rounded the corner to head to my house, I began mentally jumping up and down and shouting!  I HAD RUN 3.56 MILES STRAIGHT!!!!  I did not set any personal records for speed, though, but I was ELATED that I had set a MAJOR personal record for distance.  NEVER in my whole 35 ½ year old life have I EVER ran over 1.5 miles straight, as far as I remember, and I nearly ran 4 miles this morning!  WHOA!!!!!

When he wakes up, I will be thanking my miniature trainer!!  Apparently, the walking and small bursts of running that we do every night have worked!  I never would have thought that only running three or four  ¼ mile stretches a night would add up to 3.56 miles straight.

I guess I am ready- a whole month earlier than I had anticipated- to start working on my speed….stay tuned…(I have a race in September that I am training for)…more to come!
