I was reading a blog this week by Amy Lynn, another mother, who is a survivor of Preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome.  The sentiment that she conveyed in one part of her blog was about just how important everything is to her that she gets to experience with her child.  How sometimes she watches the little things longer than some other moms.  Sometimes I think people look at me and at how excited I get about the things that Drew does or says and they wonder why I think these things are such a big deal.  Sometimes I think people assume that I do these things because Drew is an only child.  Sometimes I almost feel pressure not to share my excitement with others.  I know these people don’t understand where I am coming from.  It is hard to explain to someone just how precious life is if they have never faced the loss of it.

I spend every day thanking and praising God for my many, many blessings, not the least of which is another day on this Earth to spend with my friends and family.  I thank God daily for the gift of my son and that I have been given the power, the will, and the knowledge to spend those days focused on making his life the best that it can be.

Today, Drew sang (sort of) and danced in front of the church for the first time.  I was one PROUD Momma!!  When he came out, I grabbed my video camera and headed for the front row.  I was going to capture this moment.  As hard as it was for me to maintain my composure and not cry at the sight of my 3 year old dancing, singing, and trying to engage the other children in the fun that he was having, I did it!  For his debut performance, he did AWESOME!  I am so proud of him and I believe he was very proud of himself, as well.

Here is his video!  Check it out for yourself!

I have watched mothers grieve the loss of their children and I have grieved the loss of a child (due to a miscarriage) and I can say that despite what people may think of me, I am determined to live in such a way that I support and promote Drew in everything he does.  I will always believe that each and every thing he accomplishes is a BIG deal and I will share it with anyone who is interested!  I am dedicated to being part of as many of his “firsts” and important life events as I possibly can.  A friend mentioned on Facebook this week that she was attending a kids’ sporting event and she was the only parent in the stands.  I found that to be very sad!  I don’t care how old Drew gets, I will NEVER be too busy to attend his events or performances.  I will make sure that I am present and engaged in his life and he will know that he is loved for as long as God allows me to be his mother.

We can lose our life as quickly as we conceive it.  We can choose how we spend the days we have in that life.  We can choose to help others, we can choose to learn from our losses and educate the world, we can choose to withdraw and disengage…. whatever your choice, it is YOUR choice!  I have chosen to be present in the world and in the lives of others to try to make a difference in the life of one or, if I am so fortunate, many.  I believe that I struggled with Preeclampsia so that I could become an educator and a spokesperson for disorders and syndromes that many are not aware of.  If along the way I can help find a cure for one or more of those issues or save, through education, one or more lives, that will be the cherry on the top of the best ice cream sundae in the world!

Here are a few of my passions…

I encourage and welcome anyone and EVERYONE to join me in my journey or find your own passion and delve into it with your whole being.  Use the time you have been given on this Earth to do something wonderful in the life of one or many.  Dedicate yourselves to celebrating life and engaging with those who surround you.  Life is what you make it.  You choose.  It is YOUR choice and YOU have the power to change your life and the world.  What will you do with your precious days??
