One of my most favorite things is GIVING.  I get so much joy out of giving gifts, giving time, giving love to someone in need.

October 22-23 and this past weekend, we spent the weekend with The Brigmonds and my mom having a Yard Sale.  Twenty percent of all of the proceeds from both the sales were donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  I am thrilled to report that we raised a total of $265 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and a total of $293 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  In an economy like this one, that is awesome!  One day I would LOVE to be able to hand over donations well over $1000, but for now, I am very happy with what we have raised.

Another decision I made this weekend, in an effort to potentially give life to someone whose life is in jeopardy, was to register for the Bone Marrow Registry.  When my husband and I participated in the Light The Night 5k for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society last year, I felt compelled to sign up, but there were so many people around the table and it was so close to walk time, that I didn’t take the time to wait and sign up then.  This year (Saturday night) when we arrived at the Light The Night 5k, we decided to walk around and see what companies were set up. I found the Bone Marrow Registry tent and immediately told my husband that I would be signing up right then.   It only took me about 10 minutes to fill out all of the paperwork and medical questionnaires, along with doing a cheek swab.  That is it!  I am now on the registry until I am 61 years old and my cheek swab will be used to see if I match anyone currently on the
waiting list or anyone searching for a bone marrow match in the future.  I really hope that I am able to save at least one life through this registry.  What an AWESOME blessing that would be!

I am in the process now of deciding what community service type of project Drew and I will be doing for Christmas.  Since we will have extremely limited funds, we will find something that we can do together and that will bring joy to someone in need.  I am thinking about taking him to a retirement home and letting him visit for a while.  He loves talking with older people.  I think he would absolutely love it and I am sure the older people would love to laugh at the things he says as much as I do!  If you have any ideas or if you know of an organization where we could volunteer, please let me know!

If you are like I used to be and don’t make “giving” a huge priority in your life, consider changing that this year.  You do not have to have a lot of money to give of yourself and your time.  The
rewards and fulfillment from making someone else smile far outweighs all of the time and effort that we put in to it. One day, I will have enough money that I will be able to hand over HUGE tips to servers and donate large amounts of money to organizations in need.  But for now, I will give of my time and I will do the best that I can do to help as many other people as I can.

As we head into Thanksgiving, I ask each of you to give thanks for the many blessings, big and small, in your lives and consider being a blessing for someone else.

If you would like to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we will be collecting donations November 19, 2011.  Please click here and donate.  THANK YOU!!!
