186 lbs!  As of today, August 27, 2011, that is both how much I weigh and how much I have lost since August 2008!!!  (Since April 2010, I have lost 149 lbs!)  I can now say that I am half of the woman I was just three years ago! 


Please excuse me while I revel in the beauty that is 186 lbs!  Most of you probably do not think 186 lbs is beautiful, but IT IS

A year ago I never would have dreamed that I would be down to 186 lbs by my 35th birthday (which is next Wednesday, August 31, by the way, if you are planning to get me a cool gift)! 

Yesterday was a prime example of how much I have changed.  When I got off of work at 4:30 p.m., I had to go pick up Drew and then head home.  On the way home, I had to get gas in the car and ended up taking a detour to avoid a ton of traffic.  I was starving!  Starving was my own fault, since I ate my afternoon snack about 45 minutes earlier than I usually do.  But no matter the reason, I was still starving.  My first instinct was to stop at a drive-thru on the way home and get something that I could quickly shove into my face while driving down the road.  I must admit that instinct, since being so ingrained for so long, was STRONG!  At that point, my brain kicked in and I started trying to think of somewhere where I could get healthy, low calorie, low sodium, unprocessed food…..and I kept trying to think….and think…. you probably know where this is going already, but I will tell you what I decided…. After thinking for the whole 45 minute drive home, I determined that there were no fast food drive-thru establishments that would fit my requirements.  Additionally, I only had approximately 380 calories left to eat and I knew that the only way to accurately control those would be to eat at home.  Despite Drew’s pleas to go to Sonic, which was so tempting….BUT I knew that as hungry as I was, I would end up getting a Sonic Blast that had almost 700 calories by itself…. I drove home. 

Once we got home at 6:30 p.m. and opened the refrigerator, I was excited to see that I had a grilled chicken breast already cooked and fresh green beans that I had cooked the night before.  Additionally, Drew had broccoli and mashed potatoes that were ready to go.  In about 5 minutes, our meal was heated and on the table!  It was GOOD and I had saved enough calories that I was able to eat some Breyers All Natural French Vanilla ice cream, too! 

The super plus side of my brain’s wise decision…. I had lost another pound this morning when I weighed myself!  Good, healthy decisions really do bring the BEST rewards!

When you begin your journey, it will be tough to avoid those drive-thru pit falls, but you can always do what I did and take it slow.  Change from the grease-filled cheese covered burger (or two) to one grilled chicken wrap.  Change from the greasy fries to a side of apple slices or a side salad.  Change from ranch dressing to a vinaigrette or a light dressing.  Change your portion sizes from two large sized portions to one regular portion.  Change from soda to sweet tea or half sweet and half unsweet tea. 

Start now making the small changes that will lead to big changes.  When I talk to people about the way I eat now, they are overwhelmed and say that it would be too hard for them.  Really, what they should focus on instead are the baby steps… change one thing today and another think next week and so on.  Ease yourself and your family down a healthier path.  There is nothing wrong with slow… all rocks begin to roll down hill slowly, but the further they go, the more momentum they pick up until they are flying.  Same principle with losing weight… start slow making small changes and let the momentum of your weight loss, increased energy, and better overall feeling carry you the rest of the way.
