In my line of work (Juvenile Court), I see families on a daily basis.  I have been able to see, over the last eleven years, families that are functioning well and families that are barely functioning at all.  One constant that I can say, without a doubt, is that those families in which the child has a positive female role model and positive male role model consistently present in their lives seem to function at a much higher level and seem to be more stable than those families where the child only has one or the other. 

The positive female role model does not necessarily have to be a mother and the positive male role model does not necessarily have to be a father.  As I discussed in my Mother’s Day blog, I believe that the definition of mother and father, as it pertains to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, should really be very broad.  I believe that on Father’s Day we should also celebrate all of the grandfathers, uncles, brothers, friends, step-fathers, coaches, juvenile court intake and probation officers, DFCS case managers, youth ministers, and other mentors, who take the time to fill that fatherly role in the life of a child. 

Children need so much care, control, and nurturing as they are growing up, in addition to learning a number of life lessens, that it is very difficult for one person to do it on their own. I believe that it is possible for one person to do it alone, but I would submit that, from what I have seen in the juvenile court system and as a mother, it is much more difficult. 

Therefore, I would like to wish every male who takes time out of his day to work with, guide, care for, and mentor a child a very Happy Father’s Day!  Thank you for your support and guidance for the next generation!  They need it!!!!!!  🙂
